Lisa Kelly, Ice Road Trucker
The excitement over the already popular show, Ice Road Truckers has risen drastically in the past few weeks, due to the new addition to the cast, 28 year old Lisa Kelly. If you’re not already familiar with the show, it’s a reality based show following the dangerous travels of the “Ice Road Truckers” who drive their massive trucks down icy roads, and sometimes over frozen lakes in treacherous conditions to bring supplies to people 250 miles North of the Arctic Circle. Kelly is the first female driver to appear on the show, and most likely the first female ice road trucker, but that doesn’t bother her one bit. “I think I’ve earned where I’m at. They don’t just judge me by the cover, and I can get the job done,” she says. “I don’t need to fit the stereotype. I don’t have to be a potty mouth, chew tobacco and be 300 pounds to drive a truck.”
With 6 years of experience driving big rigs, she’s paid her dues, “I had to work twice as hard,” she said. “I had to pull my weight and everybody else’s and get the job done as fast, or faster.” But the hard work doesn’t bother at all, and she enjoys the job thoroughly, “I like the freedom of getting out and not having a boss directly there.” And she’s found ways to have fun with it as well, “I’ve had tourists stop and take a picture. I pulled over to tighten some belts on my flatbed and I had an audience. I could feel their eyes. It’s fun. I know they’re watching and I just put on a show.” When she’s not hauling up in the arctic circle, she runs a truck out of her hometown of Wasilla (also home to Sarah Palin).
